CHARACTER INFORMATION

Character Name: Syllona Kamel

Age: 19

World Information: Syllona is from a universe called the Song, with planets called Verses, and an absolute center refered to as the Refrain which is inhabited solely by beings of pure energy called Lyrics. Everything follows this theme of music trickling all the way down to things like magic users being Singers and names in some places traditionally having something to do with sound. The 'syl' in Syllona is an example of this. Everyone in the Song can use magic, and as you might guess the majority does so through singing or playing instruments. However, magic isn't as narrow or simple as the ability to play music, and an individual's magical abilities have far more to do with how they communicate with others and the world around them. Essentially, too, by just how their head works. The majority sings, those who can but don't use instruments, and minorities include those who cast through writing, through dance, and even through dream. (However, Dreamers are an exception to the rule, as one can only become one as appose to how every other type is naturally cemented through early childhood as the single method a person can use. This is because dream magic is a symptom of mental illness. For this reason it's also the only magic type that can change back to another.)

Magic can do all sorts of things with the right skill and spell knowledge, manipulating elements, invoking emotions, creating temporary 'closed spaces', or pocket dimensions parallel to the real one it's rooted to. A very big part of the culture in this world is space travel, which even the most basic magic user can do. It requires the song of the Verse they want to go to(functioning much like an address) and harmony with any travel partners to construct a ship(much the same as a closed space, only much smaller and mobile.) to fly in. Because of the mechanics of this no one has yet to actually 'see' what space looks like.

Humans aren't the only species in the Song or even the dominant one. In fact due to a massive magical attack some 10 years ago, the human population is only one third of what it used to be. Relations between Verses is typically peaceful, even with the human race currently drawn back from politics.

Character Information:
To start Syllona's story we have to go back a little bit. First, there's her father Avanti Prasad, a valued officer of the galactic police system. During one raid on a research lab dabbling in illegal spellwork he takes chase on a woman named Pisha Kamel. She insults him and gets away. He sees her again at an ambush at some city ruins bandits have broken into. She insults him again and gets away. This goes on a few more times until one of these chases she stops and says, "we have got to stop meeting like this." Avanti asks her what in the world she's trying to do that's worth all these run-ins with him, and Pisha confesses that her research is into unexplored sections of the Song and other magical ways to get there, and for her to stop and get legal clearance anything she learned would be reviewed and funded only for the most profitable trading routes. Avanti confesses himself during this conversation that while he loves his job and receives high honors for his service, he doesn't have the choice to choose his own moral standings in morally grey situations... much like the one they'd found themselves in. They click with one another and fall in love fast, discussing and simultaneously agreeing that forming this relationship was worth the risk and they even began plans to petition to change several laws. Together, they decided, they'd try to make a difference.

One thing leads to another and they soon have their daughter Syllona, who grows up in that strange grey area between both sides of the law. She spent most of her younger life with her mother who would bring her along on her now-just-toeing-the-line-of-legal research work on the complexities of space while her father was often busy taking care of crime. Things changed quickly though, as the obvious conflict in morals between her parents butted heads, particularly regarding what each considered acceptable for a child to be exposed to, and after avanti suffered a grievous injury in where he lost an arm, he forced Pisha's hand and confronted her about the safety and well-being of their child. He insisted Syllona was not safe with Pisha's life style and Pisha, heart-broken, agreed. They made arrangements and went their separate ways, Avanti taking Syllona to live with him and only able to have long distance contact with her mother. It was hard times, but Avanti was a good father and Syllona was happy.

That was, of course, until he was called back for a meeting with the galactic police and never came back. Syllona launched then on her own, desperate and determined to find him herself now that she was older. She hitched a few rides Verse hopping, floundering for any clues or a good place to start looking. Because of the nature of space travel, she's forced to find people willing to create a ship with her as what little money her father had left behind grows scarce and she has to set aside her natural distrust of strangers to make things work. First she finds her cousin, Mawe, who had originally been road-tripping with a group of Non-Singer protesters. Syllona learns the bit of family she hasn't had much contact with is just as wild as her mom, and has minor trouble adjusting when Mawe proves to be a very loud and passionate advocate of human rights. He agrees to help her find his uncle, and along the way often discusses Syllona's magic with her-- she's a Writer, often called the slang word "Inkwell" by the verbal-inclined majority, and as such is often treated with discrimination over what many perceive as a handicap. Syllona at first is resist to these talks, stating that she knows but there's not much she can do about it, and always Mawe insists that just because it's normal for her doesn't mean it should be.

The two quickly gain another travel buddy in Musef, a rising idol, when they stumble upon one of her concerts. Musef is a very grandiose and confident woman who's grown sick of the celebrity life and joins their travels as a way to give herself a break from her disenchanted life. It turns out, she's familiar with Avanti and sets the three of them on their first promising lead.
Along the way they gain more friends, and lose others; the quest to find Avanti grows and expands to include each of their goals as well, though Syllona never loses sight of her personal mission. Even as a few years pass, and they uncover more and more unsettling things about the current situation inside the justice system... most notably how convicts and death row prisoners have been disappearing without a trace. It turns out that many of the things her parents had set out to stop together (and set aside when she became their priority) were problems that had since grown into more complex and dangerous shapes.

Syllona is coming to Ryslig after meeting a few of these unsavory sorts (some with charges that happen to be about discrimination against her kind of magic) and learning that they'd been handed over by the police to someone who'd been experimenting on them with extremely illegal emotional manipulation spells but had managed to escape. All the convicts but one flee shortly after, and the one left behind is none other than the very woman who cut off Avanti's arm all those years ago, Syllona struggles with whether or not to kill her, furious at the reminder of all her father's suffering, but let's her live when the woman explains how she and the other escapees had gotten out. Avanti himself had broken them out not days ago, giving Syllona not only the very first confirmation that her father was still alive but that he was close by too.

Personality: On first meeting her anyone can tell Syllona is an unobtrusive person. She usually keeps to soft-spoken tones, even in dire situations, and it’s not unusual for her to forgo speaking entirely if she doesn’t feel confident she can navigate the conversation. On the other hand, when her curiosity is piqued she can be easily persuaded into animated discussion. She’s not afraid to ask questions either, and loves hearing other perspectives to mine for fresh information. Observation is the name of the game; In general, she much much prefers writing mediums, but obviously this isn’t always a viable option. As part of the reason she has strange hang ups with speaking freely is there being less time to digest and navigate what might get her killed. Syllona works very strongly on the idea that ‘you can’t be paranoia if they actually are out to get you’ and while the friends she's made in her travels have softened this mindset it's always present in the background.

She's a very careful person who finds herself giving into curiosity all too often. She can speak bluntly but not through any intention to be rude, its just the most comfortable way for her to convey what's on her mind. She suffers acute anxiety and mild paranoia which can take a lot of energy to beat down when she feels she's in danger. She's had time and support in becoming better able to handle panic when it sets in, but still often relies on schooling her expression when fear flares up.
Magic has always played a big part in her life and as such she's very knowledgeable about it, full of theories on the application and manifestation of it's energy that she picked up from her mother's research. Being a Writer in a singer-dominated world never curbed this interest from including every other kind of magic. Oh her travels she learned from many strangers about how they work their own spells and excitedly experimented with her less than thrilled friends on variations on every new and interesting tricks they came across. Despite her introverted nature, Syllona does genuinely like talking with others and hearing their stories. She's also quite lonely, even with all the friends she's made, from losing her father and some awkward and confusing feelings of resentment towards her mother. Especially as a Writer, it's been difficult for her to fully reach out to others to make connections and for all the practice she's forced on herself she's still got a ways to go. She ignores this loneliness and shoves it down, adamant that it won't matter when she gets Avanti back, but it's clearly affected her bone deep.

Lastly, while not a cruel person, there's no denying having parents from both ends of legal and illegal have left Syllona's morals sorta shaky and somewhere firmly in the grey area. Pragmatism goes for more than what would be the kind of cruel thing to do if she has no emotional stake in a situation. Her friends, who are very firmly NOT morally grey, have helped shake this deep rooted paradigm up, especially in recent events, much to Syllona's newly conflicted stress.
